A De Castillia 23 l’Award of Excellence CTBUH 2022

To spread the culture of reuse in schools in the Gratosoglio area of the city, Urban Up organised new Smonting workshops for high-school students at THE DAP, Dei Missaglia Art Park. Lots of young people accompanied by their teachers and with the supervision of coaches, tried their hand at this activity that is not easy to describe because it involves many things. Starting with the word Smonting, it is necessary to point out that it is a neologism - SMONTare INsieme Giocando – (DISSassemble TOgether Playing) coined to define an activity that makes it possible to discover the world hidden inside electronic objects (computers, printers, smartphones, cd players, etc). Smonting is an activity based on disassembling electronic waste that become urban treasure troves which can be used to for teaching and creative moments and environmental sustainability and human relationships; it is a social activity strongly dedicated to sustainability; Smonting is a lesson to children and young people on how objects are built to understand and repair them as well as separate the components to reuse or recycle them.

Trying Smonting therefore becomes a training experience given that it requires great skills of observation, control and respect: disassembling is not breaking, it is much more difficult.
